Different key and Ignition cylinder

Post by Ray07V70R »

Anyone know about replacing key and Ignition cylinder with one from a different car. How to make old keys work or get the key that came with the cylinder work.

Can you please explain the situation why you need to change the cylinder and key? Theoretically one can swap the cylinder and make a copy of the key that came with that cylinder so it will not have immobilizer chip in it. Then to take old key and attach immobilizer chip from it somewhere close to Antena and it should start..

The mechanical function of a matched key -lock cylinder will work fine

The electronic function won’t.

The keys are chipped so a key from another car won’t work unless it is added in VIDA ( dealer software), at the dealer or with a paid subscription to the Volvo server.

Many locksmiths claim they can code keys to Volvo, as do software hackers , and none have succeeded and been verified, so beware the internet.

There is a hack where you use another key, and keep an original key close to the antenna for the chip function , which works , but will generate codes for “ key in too long”

There is a method to surgically open up the tumbler and “re-key” it to accept the old key. I’ve done this myself and described the process somewhere in MVS history. I’ll see if I can find that thread.
As was asked above, what is the issue with the old one? Is it getting hard to turn the key within the tumbler?

The proper solution although expensive is to order a "column lock" from the Volvo dealership. It will come with a new key, a valet key, and a new column lock. They're not too difficult to install. The downside is they cost about 4-500 bucks. Mine was $425 CDN as I recall about two years ago. I tried to open the tumbler and re key it but gave up, its probably possible but I didn't have to technology or patience. You can also dig the transponder chip out of your key and tape it inside the steering column plastic in the vicinity of the antenna to fool the electronic piece.

I did two column locks, one p80 and p2 during Covid. $400-500 each for part
