Re: 05 XC70 Front End Noise After Control Arm Replacement

Post by DavidE7 »

Thanks for your post above about suspension noises 6 years ago - the comment about the rear control arm bolts was critical. The rear control arm bolt tension was the last piece I was missing!

Steps to fix all noises from my XC70 suspension, drive, and steering:
1. Replaced struts, shocks, springs, spring seats, upper strut bearings, and jounce stops. One rear spring was broken. all the dampers were worn out.
2. Replaced front and rear stabiliser links that all had play and made noise. Tightened the front stabiliser mounting bolts that were loose.
3. Replaced bushings in the front control arms because they were visibly torn.
4. Replaced front half shafts because the originals had excessive slop.
5. Replaced stripped collar for the bevel gear and rebuilt the entire bevel gear with all new seals.
6. Replaced the right engine mount that was soaked in power steering fluid for a long time and no longer supporting the engine.
7. Replaced the steering rack, rear engine mount, and power steering pump. (All rough steering feel was fixed!)
8. Installed sub-frame bushing inserts.
9. Replaced the cracked-in-half rubber front engine mount.
10. Replace the transmission torque link because the rubber was worn out.
10. Replaced the sub-frame bushing inserts with brand new sub-frame bushings because the inserts didn't fit into the power steering fluid soaked rubber bushings and the bushings were still making noises. Also added the rubber donuts from the S80 suspension fix to the top of the rear subframe to body joint.
11. Tightened the control arm rear bolts all the way to 130 NM as listed in VIDA for M14 bolts!!!
All suspension, steering, and driveline sounds were finally eliminated...
