Dimensions of Cam Seal Drift Tools (9995718 9995719) Topic is solved

Hey everyone,

I have to change the Cam Seals on my Volvo S60 sooner than later and Volvo calls for two special tools to install the cam seals to the correct depth. These tools are not easily available in Germany and/or rather expensive (not sure I want to pay 120€ for one plastic piece).

So does anyone have the tools handy and wants to make some photos of them and measure how high the protrusion is? The rest of the dimensions would be nice as well, but I can derive them from the spare cylinder head that I have laying around if necessary. But the head does not have the seals installed anymore, so I can't measure the installation depth.

For reference: These are the dimensions I need (the models are just rough reference sketches without any real dimensions yet):

I would like to create 3D printed replicas of these tools and will publish them free to use for everyone on Printables.

It would be awesome if someone could help out here

i pushed them in by hand, then used the old seal to drive them in with a small hammer, push them in until they are seated flush.
lubricate with a bit of oil first.

You can make the tool out of wood. I wrote the tips in the axle boot DIY.

Thank you for the suggestions. I know that there are many ways to install the seal, however I would like to replicate the original tool so that I and other people in the future can recreate it to have the Volvo specified depth of installation

Many moons later I finally had enough motivation to dig out the valve cover of the scrap B5254FS I have laying around aaaaaaaaaand the cam shafts are not the same as the scrap cam shafts of the B5244T3 which are also laying around (but those probably have the same dimensions as the B5244S2 I have in my S60).

Fortunately one of the cam shafts was still in it's original position and as you can see, the seal should not be pushed all the way in (at least on the B5254FS) as that would block the oil return channels (if they are not already blocked by oil coal that is...)

This tool is called "9995449" and even though it's absolutely no use for me (I won't be changing cam seals on an engine with a hole in the block any time soon), I'll publish it on Printables.

While I had the filthy valve cover already on my dining room table, I took the opportunity to recreate the 9995450 tool as well, which is used to drive in the rear cam seal:

VIDA states that you can drive in the seal 2mm further if there is an excessive wear groove on the cam, so I created three versions of the tool with different offsets: Flush, +1mm and +2mm.
According to my measurements, +2mm would be nearly bottomed out but not totally bottomed out. However there seems to be some variation in the dimension of the seals available. The ones installed had 7.2mm width, but there seem to be seals with 6.5mm width available as well:

Very nice. Is it possible for you to take a picture of the depth of the seals without the tools but from the front not top?

For axle seals, I made the installation tool from piece of wood (2 x 4 wood). All the details are in this thread....

Sure, but keep in mind that this only is half of the cylinder head, so the seals might not necessarily be in straight.
I don't really want to reassemble the valve cover on the cylinder head just for pictures

I still need the dimensions of the later tools (9995718 and 9995719). Perhaps someone has a valve cover laying around from a broken engine with VVT (preferrably VVT only on the intake or exhaust) they want to send me or take measurements off?

It's quite difficult to capture on a photo, but I hope that is what you were looking for?
The rear seal was pressed in with the +2mm tool.
