Dramatic loss of oil - no leak

Post by barryV »

Two days ago I decided to check my oil level, since I was making a four-hour drive the next day. When I pulled the dipstick for the first time, I wondered if my eyes were playing tricks with me, since there didn't appear to be ANY oil showing. I reinserted the dipstick and saw the same thing. Still only half believing what I was seeing, I decided to put some oil in and see if something showed up. Sure enough, the dipstick showed that quart of oil on it. I had never seen any loss of oil before in this car and I took it to my mechanic for a check (having filled the engine with the required amount of oil). He said there was no evidence of an oil leak and guessed the problem was probably with the turbo system, which he doesn't work on. So I'm about to make an appointment with the Volvo dealership for an in depth analysis but I wondered if anyone else had experienced this happening?

1. Out the turbo and out the pipe.
2. Through the rings and out the exhaust valve and out the pipe.
3. Through the valve guides and out the exhaust valve and out the pipe.
4. Out a gasket and on the floor.
5. You forgot to check it for a year.

You might have someone follow you and give it a full throttle blast up a hill. Then maybe down a hill or fast on the flats and let off suddenly. Any puffs of smoke?

Some engines of that era had defective oil rings and there was even recall. Look into that. If your car is low millage, you might possibly get your way into that recall. I would remove spark plugs and check if there are much oil deposits on them. Remove turbo pipe and see how much oil is in intercooler(you might be surprised). What engine this cat has 4cyl, 5cyl? T5 or t6?

Many car maker in that era went for that same ring design to save fuel and the consumer paid for it in trouble and future vehicle cost.

How long has it been since the last oil change? The volatiles can evaporate lowering the level.

As mentioned above, the T5 engine of the 2015/16 years had defective oil/piston rings and burned oil. As suggested, check with the dealer and see if your car was covered by the recall and if it has been checked for this issue.

Good Luck!

Where did you find a dipstick to check your oil level?
