Top PCV Hose Leak - New Hose - 2007 Volvo XC70

Post by cmayo1 »

I redid the whole PCV system not more than half a year ago and the PCV hose on top of the engine is leaking. I replaced those, in my opinion, dumb ear clamps with a screw on clamp and as much as the new clamp secures the hose and the hose completely covers the outlet, there is still oil leaking from the bottom of the hose. It's not an excessive amount, but it needs a good wipe after 40-50 miles.

Tightening the clamp has a sweet spot on mine. Too little? The pressure will push the hose off. Too much? The hose will slide up the more you screw down the clamp. I don't see any cuts or abrasions on the hose, and like i said, it's brand new. Has anyone else had this experience? Should I spend the money on an ear clamp? I know that the pressure from the engine can push it off, but is it possible there's too much pressure?

Thanks!

Common problem bc that nipple has no raised lip for the PCV hose.

It's a pretty annoying leak, I wouldn't worry about it if it was a few drops, but there's a good amount on the top of the engine every 50 miles. Do you know of a fix?

When you use an oetiker clamp there they neither leak nor come off unless the crankcase has excessive pressure. You can use hose clamps on hoses and kids fingers at birthday parties.

Update, I'm pretty sure the oil was leaking out of a bolt I removed when doing the PCV job and didn't replace. Luckily I didn't lose it. Gotta take it for a commute, will update.

I would ask myself where did you buy that hose. Was it oem or from ipd "home" brand. If ipd- well I am biased since those hoses lasted 1 year for me and turned into mush(replaced with oem 3 years ago and happy). Also where you considering leak coming from the oil cap? When the last time you replaced cap or the seal(seal from fcp is $2 or less, so I change every oil change)

The hose was from the FCP euro kit. I've thought about trimming it, putting on an adapter and making it more of a hard plastic so it's not as slippery, but I'm not there just yet.

The previous owner thought that the oil cap was leaking because it was bad rather than the PCV system needing replacing, so he replaced it twice. The seal looks good, but I'll consider replacing it.

Fcp usually uses oem/oe hoses in their kits involving rubber elements. Not sure the hard plastic vs soft rubber(which with age and heat will turn into brittle-hard rubber) will do you any good. I would clean everything nicely and replace the rubber gasket at the fill plug. Retest if your pcv system works and no too much pressure. If everything checks- you can install proper oem clamp to the hose and put some oil dye to see if the leak will be back.
