Because you get the huge benefits of VVT - more HP, better mileage, and cleaner emissions.

Its a pain but once set you can forget.

Followed the above plan, and took it out for another drive. CEL came on again. Same code I'm sure.
But it idles even better and runs great. A little stumbling if giving it sudden throttle, but other than that, and the light, you'd never know there was an issue.
I ended up with the exhaust sprocket mark almost vertical, which put it one tooth cw relative to the mark on the cover. I'm not sure that the hub was fully rotated cw at that point, but close.
I don't know where to go from here since other things could be causing this issue, so maybe I'll wait and see if I can find some parts to switch out at the local yard like the cam position sensor and vvt solenoid so I can rule them out.

Upon further thought, and a couple of Guinness, I think I'm going to have to go back to square one on this in the next day or so.
I feel like I've messed with it a little too much, and at this point I feel like I'm just throwing darts. Plus with recent info, I hope to get better results this time. So plan is :

Bring all 3 marks in line
Do the 90* back and forth
Install the rear cam locking tool
Remove belt
Rotate the vvt hub all the way cw and hold
Loosen and set the sprocket approximately where it needs to be
Install the belt while moving the sprocket so it lines up with cover marks and tighten
Tension the belt
Remove locking tool

Fingers crossed that this will work and kill the code.

And the above procedure seems to have worked :D Running beautifully and no CEL. At least so far.
