Hi,
I have a 2004 V70 with just over 105K miles on it. I love this car. I need to get new tires on it before the winter season. I live in Northern Virginia so we get some snow and some ice, but nothing like the northeastern states. Any advice on where to get a good deal on tires? Thanks.

We just got through buying the Bridgestone Serenity tires from Tirerack for the same '04 V70...it's an all season grand luxury touring tire. They are very smooth and had great ratings! You can check them out but for some snow you might want a different tire from the same class that has better handling in snow.

I bought a set from TireRack.com.
They were 1/2 the price, only cost $5 a tire, and were on my porch 2 days later. I paid $20 locally to have them mounted and balanced. Best deal I ever got on tires.
I bought Bridgestone 90,000 mile steel belted radials. Put 30,000 on them so far and love them.

What do the different ratings mean? What is 91H or 91T or 89R etc?

The numbers 91, 89, etc. are load ratings (my understanding is how much weight the sidewalls can withstand per tire- cornering will increase load):
91 = 1,356 pounds
90 = 1,323 pounds
89 = 1,279 pounds
88 = 1,235 pounds
87 = 1,201 pounds
With our vehicles it's best to try to get 90 or above (89 isn't bad). The letters are speed ratings for tires:
M 81 mph 130 km/h
N 87 mph 140km/h Temporary Spare Tires
P 93 mph 150 km/h
Q 99 mph 160 km/h Studless & Studdable Winter Tires
R 106 mph 170 km/h H.D. Light Truck Tires
S 112 mph 180 km/h Family Sedans & Vans
T 118 mph 190 km/h Family Sedans & Vans
U 124 mph 200 km/h
H 130 mph 210 km/h Sport Sedans & Coupes
V 149 mph 240 km/h Sport Sedans, Coupes & Sports Cars
W 168 mph 270 km/h Exotic Sports Cars
Y 186 mph 300 km/h Exotic Sports Cars

You have a trade off with a higher speed rated tire...the rubber tends to be softer the higher speed you go and therefore it wears out quicker but it does stick to the road better and you get better handling.
The Serenity tires I mentioned use the Turanza technology (the more they wear the stickier they get). Bridgestone no longer offers their previous Turanza (LS-H and LS-V) tires which we had the LS-V's on both of our turbo vehicles (S70 and V70) and loved them, but the tires being a "V" rated tire, wore out in about 30K miles (although they are 40K rated tires). We have opted this time for the "H" rated Serenity tires for the V70 (91 load rating and 70,000 mile rating!) and I have just installed General (don't laugh, they are great tires) Altimax HP tires (also a 91 load rated tire with 55K mile rating) on the S70 at quite a savings. You can read review of both tires and compare them to other tires over on www.tirerack.com

Sorry to bump an old thread but it's related.
Our S70 currently has 87T Michelin Harmony. Yes we know they're terrible, but do they in anyway compromise safety? When I drive the car, I tend to corner fairly quickly and more aggressively as I like the g-forces generated and stuff. I'm also trying to waste the tires so we can get new tires earlier
