Spinning Outer Tie Rod Thread - 2007 XC70

Post by cmayo1 »

More generic advice that something specific to Volvos.

When trying to undo the nut on an outer tie rod end, the bolt (shaft? thread?) that it is seated on keeps spinning. I've seen advice saying to put a jack underneath it to keep pressure on it, but I'm not sure that would do anything because it's not connected to the external body of the outer tie rod, if that makes sense. This doesn't seem normal, seems like a cheap part was installed previously. Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Bc when you put a jack below the outer end of the tie rod, you push the bolt part upwards in the tapered hole, preventing it from spinning.

Propane torch is very helpful in this case.

I use only Lemforder or TRW brand.

Tried heat but didn't work. I'll give the jack a go. Thanks!

You can often use a tire iron to pressure the tie rod end and an impact to spin off

I've got a crowbar I can try. My 'garage' is two complexes over, so walking back forth for tools I need is annoying, but I'd rather be sheltered from the rain
