Hit a deer, any repair gotchas?

Post by beewstew »

My son hit a deer with the 2004 Volvo xc70 tonight. Hit was passenger front side. Airbag did not go off. He was able to drive home. R Headlight, fender, bumper, grille and hood will need to be replaced, not sure about the rest.

Assuming the frame isn't bent, are there any gotchas with installing junkyard parts? Eg, will I need Vida+dice to recode anything?

Edit: From Wikipedia, the P2 front ends look really similar. Would basically any bumper, light, hood etc from a 2000-2007 xc70, v70, or s60 fit a 2004 xc70?

Here is a video on how to remove the crash bar, it needs to be drilled out.

Have the deer checked for chronic wasting disease, otherwise straight to grill.

@vtl there's no point in checking for CWD in Southeastern Minnesota, we're not as bad as Madison, but the DNR stopped trying to control the spread with culling. Probably because the good old boys in the Minnesota deer hunting association say "I haven't gotten sick yet. What's the big deal?"

Lights need to be pre 2005 ie pre facelift glass ones. Ive heard people of swapping to the plastic ones but your mileage may vary.

Do you have the xenon lights or normal halogens. Xenons may be a bit more trouble to find, halogens should not be too much trouble.

Hoods should be cross compatible with s60's from ebay listings.

Those bumper covers are pretty robust. If you dont mind the crack then take a hair dryer to the dent and it will pop out. Your hit is right at the edge where the crash bar is and you might not have damaged it. I crashed into a car right on that corner and my crash bar was fine.

You may need a new fender to get that light to fit. It was a bit of a PITA since you need to take off the rocker trim pieces which are riveted in. It was a bit of a bear on my S60. Hood and light would be the minimum to get it driving. The biggest obstacle in terms of install will be getting that fender off as the light fit is pretty tight.
