Well... I've got everything unhooked from the top and front - now I'm down to the exhaust and transmission connections.
I'm hesitant with the transmission... should I try to pull the whole assembly or separate them inside of the engine compartment?
I'm trying to figure out if I can leave the axles and transmission in place... but it's not looking promising right now...

I quit trying to figure it out behind the computer and figured it out under the car! Only thing left to figure out is how to get the line that runs along side the engine (from the oil cooler to the rear of the engine) loose... once it's gone, I can get to the last 2 bolts that need to come out

Cannot say on your car, but maybe check this: I know on the S60 it is MUCH easier to pull both at once, the issue is you cannot slide the engine far enough over to clear the tranny before it is hard up against the frame rail, they have to come out as a unit.

Hey, sorry to hear about your XC60’s engine trouble—that’s never fun!
If you’re comfortable with tools, I’d suggest first checking the extent of the damage before committing to a replacement. Sometimes a teardown can reveal if the damage is limited (e.g., just the top end or valvetrain), but if there’s rod knock or significant internal failure, a used engine swap is often the more cost-effective and less time-consuming route. Used engines around $1500 sound reasonable if you can verify mileage and condition.
As for a reliable shop manual, I highly recommend this one:
https://workshopmanuals.org/product/volvo-xc60-manual/
It’s the same type of workshop manual used by Volvo dealers and covers all the specifics for the XC60—including step-by-step engine removal and installation, torque specs, wiring diagrams, and more. It’s an instant PDF download, so you can start planning right away.
