Was today's work a rule or a ruin?

Got a bumper on the car. Sweet! That's a rule.

Did I fix the leak from the new water pump? No. That's a ruin. Especially since I spent the evening taking the whole thing apart and making sure the surface was clean and smooth. More investigation necessary. And doubly horrible since the goal is to get the car set up to go to Virginia and be driven daily.

I do love having an S70 bumper on the car, though. Instead of the old XC bumper it had on there.

Today I went to the Moffat Rally where almost 600 cars attended and the sun shone. The Moffat show is always an interesting one as it's close to the border and gets a lot of southern cars attending that we don't usually see further north.

The weather was so warm we decided to wait until most of the other cars left and we had a clear drive home

Not everything was done today, but the V70 restora... EV conversion (it feels more like a restoration at this point lol) made some progress.

The front shocks were assembled and are ready to be installed once the rest of the front axle is back together.

The front subframe got new subframe bushings. The installation was a breeze with my 3D printed tool, but the threaded rod was pretty much toast after installing eight of these bushings (four on my S60):

The front knuckles were completely disassembled, cleaned, painted and reassembled. Since everything was replaced anyways I used the opportunity to upgrade from 15" to 16" brakes:

Under the inner wheel liners there was some rust, so I ground it all off, applied epoxy based rust converter, repaired the seams and primed everything with Brantho Korrux. Once that is quite dry, it'll be painted with black paint and hopefully stay rust free for the next years:

In all wheel wells there was some nasty bitumen based undercoating and I'm not sure if that was original?
It was sprayed on the springs and wheel liners as well (partly), which I don't really think Volvo would do?

The other side needs some more attention, under the plastic liner a rust hole developed. Interestingly right where the bracket for the side cusion was spotwelded on:

Next up are the brakes, new calipers are on the way and the steel braided brake lines and all the other components are already here.

I've removed the rails for the roof to get a better look under them and around them. Some touchup work is gonna be needed. I also want to repaint the rails themselves as the paint isn't great in places. I have been thinking some 2k dark grey paint should work, then a coat of 2k matte clear.

Gonna need new fasteners

I am just going to do spot applications with tiny brushes on this, some light grinding and rust convertion first. I don't think there's a point in buying a touch up kit, I got cans of 2k clear coat so I'll have the paint store mix up some new base coat and do it myself.

Also removed these cover strips on the A-pillars

Image

They've separated in the middle which explains how they managed to lift up from the car and leave a gap. Unfortunately these seem to be hard to find so I'll have to attempt to salvage them somehow. I've tried epoxying it together and it's been sitting overnight. Not yet checked on it. Then maybe it can be painted.

And finally I removed the front right fender. A few of the bolts were really hellish to get out, had one final nut that I didn't see and drove me nuts

Image

And here's the fender in all it's glory:

Geometry doesn't look too difficult, bunch of straight planes mostly but some parts gonna require more beating. If you'd try and make it from one piece then yes it'd be a hard job, but weld together from simpler shapes and it simplifies the job. At least all the stuff hidden beneath the bumper doesn't have to look great.

Strangest thing when I went to install the used knuckle.

I couldn't get the axle nut off, but in the process, the used original lug bolts of the knuckle I got were able to properly thread into the hub, torqued down properly and everything. The H&R bolts did not thread in when I tried.

I won't be using the car until it's checked out properly and replacement braided brake hoses arrive though.

Did the pcv with larger fuel hose mod.
Old one wasn’t clogged that bad. Seems like it was done not too long ago. Still replaced everything.

But now I have to retrace every connection and hose, because the engine is hesitating when cruising highway speeds at around 3k rpm and higher.

It is heartening to see so many new cars being added to the MVS family here. And the level of talent and enthusiasm is awesome to see.
Great work all of you guys and your work getting your cars to a place you are happy to own them.
