I can see why the Orange Plagues Frat Brother doesnt want China Selling BYD in the US - for half the price , you get a lot of car.

BYD? Is that the same company that is being supported by communist government and is being actively criticized by many automakers inside the home market? It could not possibly be true, but i heard the rumor that BYD is utilizing cheap parts which are failing eco standards even in China. Also another likely lie is the fact that they take almost 300 days to pay their parts suppliers(not big in economy but other than "too big to fail cuz brother Si will support" nothing comes to mind. ). On more practical side, I read that "big brother" requires all EV makers in China to maximize number of parts which are the same so the cost is down. So if you factor cheap parts, cheap labor, ecology standards it will = half the price. It is possible that Trojans also were viewing a horse as a great deal...
On the other note, lets all make a gentleman's agreement to leave politics for a voting booth when it will be time to cast your vote.

My coworker said the same thing about his daewoo magnus or whatever sedan they had that was “fully loaded” for only 20k, less than a year of ownership, he stopped bragging about it.

They may or may not be quality, but $7800 for a new car? Hello. That is a 1980s price. I thought my VW was a steal at $24k new in 2017. We're lucky there is a 100% tariff on Chinese cars, from a North American jobs/manufacturing standpoint, or else these things would grab a ton of sales from other brands.

The entire economy in China is control and subsidize by the Central Gov. Cheap things will get dumped all over the world and testing the car is different from using it long term.

Ford can't compete as they have mediocre products to begin with. On top of that they can't compete with a heavily subsidized auto paid for by the Chinese Gov.

Do you think US manufacturers are not subsidized? They more or less write the EPA MPG laws, among other home-court advantages. Without the US world hegemony that keeps oil prices low, what would happen to the Big Three? They only make money on large SUVs and full size trucks.

Yes, Ford is completely lost in a forest and has been for many years. Same with Fiat/Chrysler/Ram or whatever they're calling it these days. And yes, same with GM.

Without fleet sales of this (mostly) underwhelming set of cars/trucks, they'd have been dead three decades ago.

Everything in this world has a price. We can opt to open or close our eyes when it comes to a fine print. In terms of every totalitarian or communist regime you think you are buying goods from them, but in reality you are building up their military might.

So i much rather buy Toyota or Lexus or Cadillac as my next new car rather than support China. In terms of Fords CEO words...man one should be long time fired for being a leader in recalls and not being able to produce a normal car people would like to buy(with exception of f150 I haven't seen anything nice in their show room last time I went for service with mine f150)

And it is a shame. In terms of Ford they can at least say they didn't took government bailout during last crisis(one of the reasons why I bought Ford truck years ago). I agree that most of the society has no need for big truck/suv , however now toyota cant keep up their corolla and camry and rav 4 hybrids in stock. Last year had to pre-order and wait 5 month for corolla for my dad. Same story with prius and slightly better with camry. Americans are not willing to buy crap and big 3 are seeing it(tariffs or not). Lets be honest here, how many of us would nowadays buy new volvo over lexus? My vote would be for lexus.

I heard the same story when I was a kid in the 70s about Japanese cars. Not so much about ideology... back then it was simply about supporting US workers or not. But the Japanese steamrolled the US market with superior products nonetheless. At the end of the day, the market decides.

I have no sympathy for the Big Three. They've literally been having a very loud alarm go off every day since I was born (1970). Lee Iacoca got fully bailed out, saved by the US taxpayer much like US banks were bailed out in 2009. If that's not a wakeup call, I don't know what is. Yet the Big Three kept their bad habits and have all but given away the passenger car market to the Japanese and Korean manufacturers. Ford doesn't make even one passenger car now, except that strange Mustang 5-door EV, if you want to count it.

I don't understand how you can have 100 years of car building experience and knowledge, yet just give up a huge segment on your own turf.

I don't want protectionism, I want the Big Three to make something desirable. I want the Big Three to beat the Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans on merit.
