Abscate, I might have to do that. A very light coating will hopefully keep it from leaking the next time that I take the pump off, which will hopefully be next weekend.
I could do it tomorrow, if it was safe to reuse a gasket I put on and torqued down less than 24 hours ago? I would go get one from the Volvo parts department, but they're not open on Sundays.
Removing that awful black gasket?

Well, it’s safe in the sense that the worst case is the gasket may seep, which would be a do over , but that can be on your schedule. Reusing it might be the time for the ***really thin*** film of Permatex sealer
That gasket doesn’t get compressed too much , so I confess I would reuse it in your case, but also think about how many miles you drive and when you could get to it again if needed.

Why do it the sketchy way and risk having to do it a third time? Not like this is a 5 min job. Do it once, do it right.

When I changed I had a real PITA bread of a time getting the old gasket off but I went at it with a razor blade and lots of patience. Took hours IIRC. But I just used the new paper gasket and it has never leaked.

Eh, I've made timing jobs and suspension overhauls happen between classes while juggling 2 jobs. Then again, I live and breathe P80/P2 so perhaps that's not as realistic an expectation for the less insane.
I still stand by my point though. Doing stuff correctly doesn't have to be miserable - make it fun! Have some buddies over for an afternoon of beers and belts, teach your offspring something, get away from the world for a few hours, etc. Very much worth it in the long run, especially if you can spin it into a good experience. The "buy once, cry once" mantra also extends to proper service.
