Weird, well no smell of gasoline today from any combination of cars in the garage. Now we just have to live in hope it was some strange abhorration which has happened and may yet come back and bite. Oh, well.

Fuel Pump was prone to failure and recalled in earlier models (V70/XC70); this is especially true in 'hot' climate regions. In the US the recall technically did not cover Volvos in the Northern areas (e.g. NY). My 2004 V70 was in NY for 8 years and now been in Virginia for 13 years (now at 270,000 miles) - its pump started leaking fumes (gradually got really bad) into the cabin at about 180k mi and 15 yrs old. I appealed Volvo and they did the recall work even though my car was registered in NY for several years...

.
Maybe it's just the seal on the gas cap starting to get old?

Also check the rubber jumper hose between the fuel tank and filler pipe. They age and leak over time but will throw a check engine light for fuel system leak after a several trips.

Checked all pipes that could be accessed. Since then there has been no reccurence of the issue. Very strange indeed. Will just have to continue to monitor all the cars for issues. Toyota has to go up on the hoist shortly for engine and trans oils and filters. It will get a check over too.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks.
