Try "rowing" the shifter back and forth from park to low about 20 times, engine on (foot on brake)
This could just be your PNP (shifter select) switch, a common problem.

If that helps, it's a temporary fix, replace the switch as no one really replaces shift solonoids anymore as there are usually other issues with the transmission if, in fact, that really is the problem

It may remove the flashing arrow and begin to possibly shift right.
The CEL and the shifter are other issues, a bad shifter or microswitch

Thank you very much but in lieu of that send money
(Car business sucks right now)

That being said you may or may not have done a permanent fix.
The PNP switch most probably still needs to be replaced, you just bought yourself some time.
If you don't, (fix it) you may get stuck somewhere, the "rowing" will not work anymore and if you drive it with the light on and that's a sure recipe for a tranny disaster!

I'll take the sainthood, replace the PNP switch as soon as you are able to

St. James speaks :D
...get your PnP checked out, cleaned out or replaced ASAP....btw, there is a write-up on the PnP cleaning which might cure your ills in the second post of the Volvo Blog section (see tabs at the top of the forum) that might work. The guy calls the switch a Gear Position Switch but it's the same thing as a PNP.
Good luck and let us know how things go.
