Compatible Rear Driveshafts for 1997-2000 V70 awd

Post by benpineapple »

Hello! I've got 2 driveshaft questions.

I have a 98 V70 with tape over its AWD emblem, until I fix it. I don't want to replace the shaft with a brand new shaft, in the event that something else is the problem too. So a local pick 'n pull just got in a 2000 V70 AWD, and I'm wondering if the driveshafts are compatible. I've been doing research by comparing driveshafts, and some say non-compatible, while a few I've found say that 98-00 are compatible.

Also, driveshafts for the proper model are determined by using the last 6 numbers of the VIN (chassis number?), and my VIN does not line up with any driveshaft VIN ranges. Most say something to the extent of "VINs 46xxxx - 64xxxx", the last 6 of my VIN are: 445557. I'm assuming it's an early 1998 model.

Thanks! Any insight would be great. I might just go to the pick 'n pull and yank it for the ole trial and error method. Not having the AWD has been brutal in Michigan, with the massive storms we've been getting.

I will check, but I know there were I believe 3 different prop-shafts (between angle gear and VC). The first one was fitted to 97 850 AWD (only came in stick shift), and up to mid year approx. 98 S/V/XC 70 AWD models. There was I believe another version and I know 2000 is different to 98. It is mainly to do with different flange sizes. Theoretically if you can swap the VC and angle gear output flanges you may be able to fit the 2000 to a 98.

VIDA only shows 2 versions:

1) V70/V70XC to chassis - 630091 part # 9183941

2) V70/V70XC from chassis - 630092 on part # 946300

If I recall one of the 2 has a 95mm O/D flange and the other was smaller (perhaps 93mm?)

Vida is confusing as if you check under 98 V70 AWD it then gives 3 versions:

1) Chassis - 465398 part # 8602507 ( which replaced part # 8251731)

2) Chassis - 465399 to 482860 part # is not listed

3) Chassis - 482861 to 630091 part # 9183941

4) Chassis - 630092 on part # 9463300.

So this would suggest there could be 4 versions available. Easiest answer is to measure the front and rear flange OD at the VC and angle gear output and use that as your guide.

Colorado Drive shafts may have information on their website or call them. They are very helpful.

Neil.

Wow, thanks a ton for the resources. Glad I didn't try pulling the driveshaft from the '00, it clearly isn't compatible. Scot850, I'll definitely be measuring the flanges prior to purchasing a driveshaft of any kind. It is still odd to me that none of those driveshafts would be compatible if compatibility is solely based off chassis number, as mine is in the 44xxxx range, rather than the 46xxxx and up. I'll get in touch with the people from Colorado Driveshaft to get a part number, if possible.

Thanks BEJinFbk, fantastic write up on driveshaft differences. Odd how the carrier mount for the 98 and 99 is a different height. Colorado driveshaft has a particular shaft listed as being for either 98 or 99. Carrier must be different for some chassis numbers.

I just purchased a 2000 V70XC that's had the shaft removed, and I'd like to put one back in there.
Chassis # 645736. Does this mean for sure it takes the 9463300 part #?

I saw Dorman makes a driveshaft (# 936870) that's 50% of the cost of OEM ($$$)...but it looks like it might only fit an older chassis, and that there are no aftermarkets made for mine?

Would appreciate any insights or advice; or if anyone in the Portland, OR area has a good used one for sale or bad used one to offer up for reconditioning.

Info cp on1998 center CVjoint

did some research a few years ago and found the following for 98 ( checking my old notes).

UK company Bailey Morris should have most of what you seek.

Bearing BMCB155 . You cannot just exchange the rubber or ring I think.

U joint GMB1610691 or GKN 1610035 (not sure).

The axle can be split by unbolting the center bolt inside the u joint in order to replace the bearing. Only 98 axle can be split up to chassis number i think 465398.

The bearings of 98 and 99 have the same mounting holes on the carrier, 2000 is different. I think the carrier is still available from volvo.

If you have a later chassis number the bearing would be Bmcb133 and non splittable shaft. U joint also different, don’t know the part nr.
