And is the true odometer reading stored in a computer which can be read? And you can manually advance the odometer to match the internal computer reading? My 2000 V70 stores the mileage in a computer even when the ABS module was disconnected so the odometer didn't increment.
I think it's likely that the odometer gear is broken. There's a small chance that the odometer is working and someone reset the trip counter immediately before taking the picture.

On US market '96 with mechanical odometer, the mileage is also stored electronically in the cluster and can be read with D2 protocol. I believe the electronic count comes from the same pulse train that controls the mechanical odometer, so it will not update without a signal from the ABS module.

It is physically possible to remove the mechanical odometer and roll it forward. This may be legally questionable even though you are changing a wrong reading to a right one.

It's up to you how much you care about the odometer accuracy on a 30 year old car!

I've noticed that the electronic mileage reading only updates in increments of 10 miles, when viewing if with 850OBDII.

Interesting, thanks. And the ABS light is on for this car, meaning the module has some issues. Maybe it stopped electronically tracking mileage. I've forgotten how this all works, but my 2000 V70 has its ABS module power disconnected though the data wires are connected and it still tracks mileage. I think I got it to stop tracking mileage when I disconnected the data wires. Just briefly, for science.

Good observation. I wonder if there's a note in the Carfax report about an accident (though Autotrader now only shows minimally useful AutoCheck reports, as of a week ago).

The interior would say it has not got a huge mileage from the pictures at least. Body looks nice and straight. If I was down there it would be coming home with me for sure, even if it is black! I don't like black cars but for this I'd make an exception. $1100 current price. Wow!
