2007 S60 Headlight D2R vs D1S bulb question...

- Question: how do I know which bulb is in the car?
- Is it D1S vs D2R?

(EDIT: According to Sylvania it's the D1S but eBay shows both so you have to look which setup was stock. Not recommending any of the bulbs just showing fitment.)

If Volvo is consistent it's the black D2R bulb. Center with the Projectors are the HID. Bulbs closest to grill are High Beam.

- "Normally", a D2R bulb is about $25-$50 online, depending on the brand (Philips, Osram, Hella etc.).

- Sometimes I see people selling slightly defective bulbs on ebay with $15 for qty = 2.
Does anyone know if these "minor scratches on the ceramic shield" affect the function of the bulb in any way?

Hi guys,

I have the D2R bulb type...how do you remove it?
Correction, my bulb is D1S for 2007 S60.

I already disconnected the connector, but the bulb holder (which has no metal clips) would not come out like they said on YouTube videos!

What is the magic in removing the bulb holder?

Apologies but is it a twist owns pull or does the igniter base disconnect from the bulb and then you unclip the bulb? Last d2r I worked with on a Acura was a pull off base and then unclip the bulb itself. Wear gloves when handling the bulb and a scratch on the ceramic should not be an issue. I’ve had good luck finding some bulbs at scrap yards when the cars are still fresh.

Turned out (I had to remove the HL assembly from the car to find out) I have D1S bulb, held by prongs and some yellow glue!!!

For the RH headlight, if you look from the passenger seat, then connector sits at 6:00 and glue is at 9:00 position.

Does anyone know if replacing the D1S make it brighter?

HID bulbs dim over time. My answer to you is it depends as it could be fade in the projector reflector elements, improper aim, or generally not bright to start.

If your bulb has shifted colour (turned a tinged red) then yes, it will definitely be a lot brighter. This means that your previous bulb has broken down and is near failure. Changing the bulb should help a lot.

Make sure your height adjustment is correct as that can make a big difference too.

Finally I had time to tackle this project.

As mentioned above, the D1S Bulb prongs setup is bad engineering.
The bulb is held by a whole bunch of prongs and hard glue!!!

So @yanga001 was right. D1S bulb intensity goes down with time.
The R side was bad, the L side is about 80% of new.

I got lucky, bought a set of VW D1S bulbs (New Old Stock) on eBay for $20/each, so $40 for two (2) D1S bulbs.
It is identical to factory bulb.
This is usually $80-$100/each at FCPEuro etc.

I replaced just the R side for now just to show ppl the difference in intensity using photos.
Pay attention to the notch at 12:00 position on the bulb during installation.
You can see the R side is about 30% of new.
I left the L side factory bulb in place so you can see.

PS: I still prefer halogen to this D1s thingy but it is much better now...

Update and questions for the guru...

I replaced the D1S bulb in July 2024 as mentioned above.

One year later, the brightness is reduced, somewhere between "Old" and "New" (using the photo above as a reference).

Questions for the Xenon gurus...

1. Can a light bulb performance go down that fast (in 1 year)?

2. The ballast:
- Can a ballast "soft-fail"?
- Anyone here had a bad ballast? If so, do you use "used" from ebay/junk yard or new?
- What is the PN for the ballast?

The D1S bulb was installed in July 2024 is good but somehow it is darker than usual.

Then found the problem, it came loose!

The D1S bulb was installed recently...if you ever dealt with it, you will know...it is held (from factory) with metal prong and some hard crazy glue.

When replaced, the prongs alone are not enough to hold it in place so the bulb came loose!

Anyway, I used the thin wires from Cat 5E Ethernet cables I have lying around. Used one twisted pair of wires, on each side: wrap around the prongs (find a place that it would not come loose, you will see some prongs with a 90-degree angle, just use common sense). Inserted the bulb, join the 2 ends of the twisted pair of wires together and gently twist them to hold the bulb in place. See photo.

All is good now.

PS: why can't they make bulb changing a 5-minute event lol?
Seriously, the 2005 XC90 HL bulb change is 5 minutes!

Alright,

O.P. here and an update for those with Xenon D1S bulb...

- Ignore my comments above re glue found in the RH side. As it turns out, there is no
glue at factory. The P.O. replaced the RH bulb but the SHORT prongs were bent outwards
to ease the installation. What happened was: the bulb could not stay in place, so they
used glue to hold it in.

- Now I learned from the opposite LH bulb because it was burned today. I removed the HL
assembly from the car (loosen bumper on left side, no need for complete bumper removal).
It took quite a bit of force to remove the LH bulb.

- As it turned out, the D1S bulb was designed with a circular groove (see BLUE arrows).
The SHORT prongs are supposed to fit inside the circular groove. Easier said than done:
I could not push the bulb in, so I bent the SHORT prongs a bit and the bulb went in fine.

- However, I still used the ethernet cable trick mentioned above just to secure the bulb
better bc I don't want to play with this again. Who would think replacing a HL bulb is such
a PITA job? Halogen bulb: 5 minutes. This particular 2007 S60 Xenon setup: one hour!

- NOTE: the connector part of the bulb must be at 6:00 o'clock position.

- I put together the photo so you can see...
