MVS approaching 24th birthday

Post by matthew1 »

I wanted to take a minute to mark this moment because I might forget to post about it next month... but now that I've "verbalized" that thought, I just now put it on my calendar .

So you'll get two posts about it, this one and the actual anniversary next month.

I found myself this morning typing out this post in my head and thought Just Put It Down on Paper, so here it is.

Thanks to all helpers

Background: helpers are a small percent of users here, by far the minority. You know who you are, but I'll add some numbers for perspective.

Of all users, helpers are much less than 1:100 of actual human interactions with this forum. Helpers' posts might even be 1:1000. What you see written here on the MVS Forums is a tiny fraction of the number of people who come in, find the info they need (or not), and leave without registering or posting. It's always been that way. The great silent masses.

Of the users who actually post, helpers are around 1:5. You can see this simply in the familiar names answering questions.

My point is helpers are rare and provide answers FAR in excess of their numbers. Without helpers MVS would be me adding stuff and having little feedback, which is awkward. I know because that's what I did for a year in the beginning, before the first MVS forum in 2002. It's like talking to a first date in person at a table, except she's not actually present for 55 out of every 60 seconds.

It's a good thing I was young back then and in Just Throw The Info Over The Wall mode, otherwise I'd have had doubts like "Is this info correct?" and "Is anybody reading this?"

I'd also like to thank users who are not statistically helpers but who do add still valuable info like "Yes that fixed the problem" and don't ever post again. That closed loop is so simple and so important.

I think many helpers here came for the information and stayed for the community.

Happy B-Day, MVS!! I know I couldn't have kept mine going without the help and info stored here. And as Luggy says, the community is so nice.

I may have lost something, couldn't find the "thank you" button. So, thank you volvolugnut.

Well as i've been in another dimension since a long time, i must say how much MVS helped me to build myself as a mecanic. I have created links with some of MVS 's community and proud of that, and my MVS tee shirt is still in good shape !

MVS let me to feel at the right place to learn and to discover how to take care of my 850. 30 years old since february. And how to say to Mattthew that i thank him for this great job done with MVS...

It's time to ask him to send me back a contributor link, isn't it ?

I just wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to Matthew and everyone in the Matthews Volvo community.

Since joining back in January, I came here hoping to find like-minded people who shared my passion, and I can honestly say the warmth, kindness, and genuine support I’ve received has been beyond anything I could have expected.

Special thanks to Matthew for creating and fostering such an amazing environment.

I’m grateful to be a part of this, and I look forward to continuing this journey with all of you!

Checking my profile, I created an account 13 years ago, so that was the first time I had something worth saying to the group.

Before that I silently read and learned from the masters.

There's a lot of people making bogus YouTube videos that gloss over the tough steps, but byte for byte, your best educational value is plain old ASCII text, typed by fingers with grease under their nails.

Thanks, Matthew!
1982 240DL: Drove it 32 years and 1.5 million miles (sold, even still had mint leather!)
2001 v70 2.4T: The most expensive $1500 car I ever bought ("Volvo Turbo" - what an oxymoron!) (sold)
2004 v70: Far less fatally-flawed v70 - It served well (sold)
2010 v50: Smaller, slightly sportier wagon. Its got a spoiler, so I upgraded with sway bars!
