Thanks to all who replied. Several helpful comments. Jonesg, yes, that's the one and thanks for the offer of your used metal gasket core. Mine is in slightly better shape so I'll proceed using it and some high temp RTV.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but two suppliers have told me that this gasket is not available separately. There is not even a Volvo part number listed. Perhaps quality aftermarket suppliers may provide them, say Victor Reinz or Elring but I've not found one listed.

Perhaps it is my stubborn nature, but I cannot bring myself to pay for a new thermostat assembly when a simple gasket that should be available for less than ten dollars would solve the problem. The OEM Volvo gasket between the thermostat and cyl head (larger and more intricate) is available from multiple sources for less than $7, for Petes sake! I'll chalk this up as one of those many mysteries that involve P2 Volvo ownership. :)

As much as I hate Chinese products, eBay currently lists these Chinese thermostat assemblies for $20 incl shipping.

How do you make money selling the whole thing, free shipping for $20 is beyond me!

Anyway, you can buy it and use ONLY the gasket part.

Then save the rest for paper weight on your desk lol...

I used RTV with no leak problems. I only saw this gasket available in Russia.

Just curious, has anyone here used anaerobic sealant?

The same stuff that is used as gasket for the oil pan...

What happened to the 'good old days' of making gaskets from gasket paper?

Scot850,
You make a good point and I seriously considered it. Two reasons that I chose not to; the original had a metal core with a layer of "sealant" applied to both sides. Certainly an extra complication and expense that would not have been undertaken if a typical paper gasket were considered adequate. Second, I only have access to the usual retail auto parts store gasket paper which I don't trust in this application. Considering the wide variety of gasket materials used in modern automotive gasket sets. I'd feel much more confident if I could choose among different materials.
