Finally got new brake hoses. How much fluid does it take to do a hose replacement and a flush? Would it make any difference flushing before the new hoses because to my mind it would mean less debris

250 mL per brake caliper bled is enough, so 1 liter bottle will do it. You can see the color change when the new stuff hits the tube.

I always have two bottles of brake fluid on standby when I do a brake job but with my fleet I know I’ll use it. Of course they get recycled at FreeCP

Used Karla kat to chase an oil plug washer FOR oil change on Juliette the Miata killer at 77k miles. Somehow I let this one run 10k on this interval, thank goodness it was full synthetic. Oil was dark but no sludge. She has not had heavy hard use, but the 1.8T likes to sludge without frequent OCI

I do not trust the VW-Audi 1.8T. I actually flipped off the long hill this trip in WY where mine blew up unannounced.

Last time I did an oil change on Evita I drove to 6 places looking for an oil drain plug gasket. None found.

This time I warmed up the VW T4 off road, drained the oil, and used its plug on the Beetle. New one on order

Oil was recycled at my local garage.

The 1.8T has always seemed to be one of VW's best. Alongside the ol reliable 2.slow and the 2.5 5 cylinder.
I had a 1.8T A4 that was pretty nice to drive, easy to work on for the most part. A little cramped to do the timing belt job, but no big deal to put the front end into "service position." They are pretty slow though.

The 1.8 T in a Beetle with a 5 speed swizzle stick is a blast to drive, and if you keep the revs up, you can blow by a RollsRoyce….

I have a VW 1.8 and it punches a little over its weight. I like it, good engine. I've hit 40mpg on long trips several times, not difficult, not "hypermiling". Iron block IIRC. I drove a 2.5 5-cylinder, and I was shocked at how little zoom it had.

Honestly of the few VWs I've driven, the 2.5 was my favorite experience. The power was smooth and consistent, right where you needed it. Not powerful by any means, but it felt very good for an NA 5 cylinder. It was in a pretty base manual Rabbit, I liked it.
My cousin has a 2.5 Passat that's been a great car, and his brother who works at VW has a few coworkers who have built 2.5s and made some surprising power out of them. Methanol, intake upgrades, etc. and still NA they're making mid 200s.

I also drove a friend's '19 GLI that was tuned and whatnot, fun car don't get me wrong, but I'm just a BMW guy lol. I'm just not a fan of the FWD platform for performance applications.

My 1.8T was an "AWM" code, maybe not the same? 2001 Audi, 180hp.
