P80 fuel filter replacement, morning musings 30671182

I’m planning maintenance on my college donation fleet ( thanks for your recent donation , scot850)

Fuel filters are 100k replacement items. On p80s they are sealed with captive double orings and held in by internal jaws thst are released by compressing a collar, pushing it towards each line ( away from the filter)

I’ve found these are either easy or a real struggle.

Conjecture.

Could this job be made easier by cutting off the snout and then vice gripping the snout , now bringing it much better access to the collar and piece to be pulled?

I’m thinking large bolt cutters for the cutting, a grinder wheel might be a bit sparky

Finally managed to sketch a visual of how this works.

Green orings seal in the fuel

Yellow springs stop snout from popping out

Red release collar, when pushed in, retracts springs and allows snout to be pulled out n

I've had zero issue with using open-ended wrenches for filters, and just prying them off.

I have a tool I cobbled together from an old alternator bracket from some other car to to lines for the pump. Seeing as I can't do the above, due to limited access.

Something like that could also work on the filters.

Also, THESE might work?

'97 855 GLT - Hers. RN swap/16T/COP/VVT/exhaust/302s/Flashed M4.4/ chassis bracing/ 2 kid seats
'78 GLE - Waiting in the wings. Future whiteblock/T5 swap.

The issue is that water and dirt gets in to the back of the connector and gravity works it down to the lower portion. This prevents the tabs being compressed. My mechanic buddy does exactly what you said. He cuts the outlet off the fuel filter as close to the filter as possible with a large pair of side cutters (like you said, a cut off wheel is not a good idea).

Then you can spray the back side of the connector with WD-40 or like and then rotate and clean some of the rust and dirt out. Las one we he helped me with on the o2 XC70 and another car he helped me with were like that. Took about 20 minutes with the use of vice grips to get them out.

I can't currently recall the fuel filter on the P80, but on the P2 there are the 2 push in tabs. For those you can now get a set of pliers with turned ends that push on the tabs to compress and help pull them off.

is it basically the style Ford started using in the early 90's?

As a Ford guy I much prefer the OG style with the white plastic horseshoe I never understood why they went to these internal spring style.
One of the part stores near me used to carry replacement springs in a little 10 pack for those times where you were taking something apart but didnt want to change the filter

Well, ordered Mahle, Bosch , and Volvo$ fuel filters and it looks like Mahle makes them for Volvo… as ofSep 2025

Both the mahle and Volvo are marked “ Made in Austria” while the Bosch is “ Made in Bulgaria “

Metal form, shape, and parlor of Mahle and Volvo are identical. You will have $40 less in your account if you want Volvo on the side, but I’ll erase Zmahle and write Volvo on one for you for $20. You save $20!

Got to the fuel filter replacement on Evita. Took an hour.

M8 sockets, Channelock , vice grips, Mapp gas. Heavy leather gloves. Eye protection , zip ties

Onthe late P80s with carbon canister in back, the fuel filter bracket has a m8 nut facing forward and a m8 bolt that both clamps the filter and holds the bracket. Mine nut was stainless ftom evap work, the bolt twisted the bracket into a pretzel and snapped.

Young abscate would have drilled out the bolt stub painfully, old Abscate broke out MAPP and then turned it out easily with locking pliers. You can just see the stud turned out. I hit it for 2 minutes with Mapp until it was getting nice and red.

I then warmed up the bracket , 120 secondsMAPp and used pliers and lockers to twist it fairly close to shape. I’ll lock the bracket with a bolt and then zip tie the bracket firm since the lineup would be tough on the deformed bracket.

Pop pop , filter back in. Good for another 100k. Used Mahle

Got the deck railing up , too.

My mechanic buddy gave me a good suggestion he uses when fitting a new filter. He wraps the end with painters masking tape to keep dirt out of the connector for future removals.

I've been doing the tape wrap too. It does help keep the connections cleaner.
