I’m devastated - 02 V70 2.4T engine is toast

Post by Jonboy74 »

Well, it finally happened. 😢

I was driving home last week and about 3 miles from home all of a sudden every light on my DIM lit up and my car lost power….and steam was coming out from under my hood.

I was able to get to the side of the road, pop the hood, and saw the cam seal blown along with the upper radiator hose and no coolant.

I had it towed to my local independent shop (all they work on is Volvos and Subarus), in the hope that I was wrong and/or they could work some miracle…. To no avail…

I am heartbroken. I really loved that car. They looked into getting a used engine, but they said their usual sources have dried up for those older engines, and came up empty…At least for anything they would feel comfortable installing. They said at 311k I had gotten my money’s worth and it wouldn’t be worth trying to fix the engine.

I may see if I can get a newer Volvo, but I’m just not sure yet.

Anyone want any parts before I sell it to LKQ? Yes, I am serious.

Either way, I appreciate everyone here who has helped me keep this baby running for as long as I did. It was a good ride while it lasted.

Goodnight Elizabeth…

Jonboy 😔

Very interesting. What exactly happened here? Oil cooler broke and forced the oil pressure inside the water system causing the hose to blow up? But that doesn't explain how that small seal popped out.

That’s 4 hours to get the head off, rework at shop for $500 or less, 4 hours back on. I’m going to say you broke the radiator snout, dumped coolant, and overheated. Not end of world.

Get Robert on speed dial and get on his schedule. It even broke when you can work on cars in Nc…the fall!

Good morning, Jonboy!

The key thing is be patient.

Check cars.com, craigslist, fb etc.

You should be able to find 2004-2009 S60 or 2004-2007 V70 for $3000-$4000.
Look for low odo cars such as 100K-110K miles.

PS: What exactly happened? Broken rad neck or massive oil loss?

The rear cam seal is notorious, especially when the exhaust VVT has too much play.

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

Have an 02 V70 XC with almost 88K miles that's a daily. If my memory serves me right abscate took a ride in it when we went to lunch last year during his business trip to the greater RTP area. If interested PM.
