What did you do to your P2 Volvo today?

I don't think Volvo do a dog crate, they do have dividers but I've never seen a crate. Thule do a crate but I didn't like the horizontal bars so I went for the German TÜV approved 4pets Pro crate as there's less for a puppy to get its legs caught on. The puppy is Brodie, a Japanese Shiba Inu and he's 10½ weeks old now. Need to wait another two weeks before we can take him out and about.

So I took a deep dive into the recently installed diva Vida (pun intented!) and found to my surprise... the gates that have been installed in my Longnose Elk. It never occured to me that these were actually Volvo original equipment! They are super easy to (un-) mount and only leave the little mounts on top and bottom. On the screenshots attached they are the number 1 and 2.

I know it`s too late to post it for you as you are already settled with the box, but I thought it might be interesting nevertheless.

P2 cabin filter change. T25 and T20 needed.

Front T20 is bad access , had to use a cranked T20 key half turn at a time.

Got a panic call from one of my younger Volvo owning friends who I did all that work on his 02 XC70 about 9 months ago. His girlfriend bought a 03 XC70 a couple of weeks ago and is loving the car. My friend was out of town as is BlackLab247 who lives nearby. The young lady was moving for work yesterday to eastern Alberta and her car had sprung a coolant leak. So I ran down to the other end of the city yesterday morning to see if I could figure out what was going on. Her dad is a handy guy and they sent me a video of water pouring out from the car with a hose in the header tank. I'm thinking possibly the owner had run the front over a concrete parking bay stop block and cracked the lest that 2 year old Nissens radiator.

Set off with a bunch of tools and a spare P2 radiator (doesn't everyone one have one..........??).

My young friend had got back late the night before but was working yesterday but turned up to check out before heading to work. My new friend Jeff (the dad) and I jacked one side up as the car is on the road as they have no driveway. Took the undertray off and was about to start running water through it to see where water was leaking from (car was sloped to the RHS on the camber). My young friend just happened to ask me a question. He had found this round piece of plastic under the car. Was it relevant? Relevant!! It was the drain plug from the radiator!? How in the heck had that happened?

I was concerned the radiator drain was damaged. The previous owner had never touched the drain when fitting it. I had great difficulty getting the 2 O-rings back into the drain hole. I'm hoping the issue was just it had never been fitted correctly at the factory? With just one o-ring engaged it had slowly worked itself out. I'm thinking it had fallen onto the under tray and then got washed out with all the hose water. A really luck find.

Refitted and water added we ran the car up to temp and no leaks. Drained the water using the lower hose this time and filled with coolant they had and some Volvo coolant I brought with me. Ran the car up to temp again and burped it. Topped up and refitted all the under trays and then the owner took the car for a run around the block and it burped again. Topped up again and she took it for a much longer run. When she came back the level was still good. I left the almost full jug of coolant with them just in case as they had a 100+km run to do that evening. Hopefully all is now well.

So if you buy a Nissens replacement radiator, check that both o-rings are pushed fully home. It is really hard to see unless you look really closely, and not something I would have done myself. An unfortunate but fortunate issue to happen when she was almost home. Also strange it took almost 2 years to present itself.

The bonus out of this for me is that my new friend Jeff is a man of many talents including a Mig/Tig welder in his past. He has offered to run a welding class for me and any of the young guys I help if they want to learn. I have a Mig welder I have no idea how to use but want to learn how to set it up and obviously use it.

Not sure what you mean by o-rings, but replacement radiators often do not have the metal sleeves in the throat of the radiator inlet and outlet, over time when you have a hose clamp on the plastic(if thin) will collapse and cause a coolant leak. I had to tear open an old radiator and fetch the sleeves and press them in(by hand) so that there is enough support for the plastic not to buckle.

I hear what you say on the metal inserts. I have not needed them so far on my Nissens radiators as they have reinforced necks where the hoses mount to.

Good news was I got an update that the young lady with the 03 XC70 made is safely with no issues to her new town over 100km from Calgary. That is a relief as I was concerned there was a chance the drain plug might blow out again if it was actually faulty and I'd missed any signs for this! Phew!

Thanks for the info, I never knew they existed. Happy to say that Brodie is now settled when in the car, in fact we have a couple of car crates for him depending on which car we are in as the crate for the V70 won't fit in my wife's car so we bought a smaller crate for that as it is only used for local journeys

I took the left rear door card off my 2001 V70 today to investigate the window not operating. As I suspected, the regulator has failed. I found a part of the top plastic roller in the bottom of the door. I think this is the first time the insulation has been removed to access the inside of this door.
I will order a Dorman replacement less motor drive. I have found the Dorman regulators to be good.
I will also need to reglue the upholstery insert since it is all loose. I will use contact cement for this job as I have found it works well.

Thanks for the info, I never knew they existed.
