99 V70 manual M56 shift knob disintegrated

Post by MarinerMan »

As the title says, I have a 1999 V70 with the M56 manual transmission. I loaned it to a friend while I was working on a ship, a lovely Swedish run Viking longship. When I returned my friend was reasonably chastened from the state of my vehicle. Most things were minor, dings from his kids, battery went bad, window switch failed. The only thing truly his fault was that the rubber overmoulding on my shifter knob had completely disintegrated. He was working on his 56 MG project and had brake kleen on his hands and it appears to have loved my shifter. Then, his kids decided to peel it off. He replaced it with a universal knob which feels pretty good, except it doesn’t have a set screw or the locating key, so it swivels constantly when I go to shift. FCP has shift knobs in stock for $135. Are there other vehicles that I can get one from? Would any volvo with the m56 transmission work? Or is it Volvo OEM or an aftermarket that has a set screw as my only options?

Can you post a picture as I have not had a stick shift in a P80 for 25+ years! I can't recall what it looks like.

There are several styles of these so you will need part numbers to get a replacement. The most common is the rubber handle with plastic insert shift pattern, less common is the shaped T5 with embossed shift pattern, and you know the Rarest, the tRue UnicoRn, is the R model of course. EU only for the R with M56 because we can’t have nice things

Thanks for the replies. The part number is 9445851. Picture below.Image

I replaced it with a shifter from Ali express, the shifter fit the locator ring, but there is a key way groove in the shifter stalk to keep the orientation. The original shifter knob had a built in locator key. The replacement does not. And the plastic construction doesn’t seem strong enough to drill a hole and thread a bolt to act as a locator. i think I have a spare chrome skull knob here with eyes that light up a spooky red .

Or a hurst T handle with a nitrous button which can be used for other things . For instance wired to a relay to bring full alternator voltage to the headlights when pressed.

Do not saw the handle off a revolver to make a shifter knob , its a good way to get yourself shot at a routine traffic stop

But most Universal mount knobs often have threaded bushings of different sizes to adapt to any size stick. Its a good way to add a little flair to the cockpit

On your next voyage, you can arrange to have him keelhauled the Swedish way.

I thought about keel hauling him. We took it for a test drive and seeing how high he was reviving before shifting and how hard he was shifting made me a bit sick. Who does that with someone else’s vehicle that isn’t some sort of souped up thing?

I think sending him the link to the FCp replacememt around Christmas time might be the best solution. I’m impressed the Ali replacememt exists. Maybe someway to attach it can be cobbled up!

I have a shift knob from a 99 S70 T5M in good condition, it is the leather version and gray in color. I'm not using it so it is available.
