Re: S70 Turbo Contactless ETM Needed

I will- anything in particular I should pay attention to with the rules?

Also- tips on removing it?
I imagine there will be more space than my car to install, as most salvage yard cars already have some things removed.
I will bring any tool I think I might need and some PB Blaster of course.

So between this thread and the ETM section, I'm a bit more lost than before. Does the progression go from white label to yellow label and then back to white again ? In the ETM section, the yellow label is mentioned as the upgraded one. I'm currently running on a yellow, but maybe the newer white is better ?

I think you will find it easy enough to remove. 4 bolts, a hose and a connector. Installing might be a little bit trickier, but totally doable.

It’s tucked under a bunch of stuff on a 1999, it’s tough access. Pull the radiator shroud out to get more room. It mounts vertically as I remember so the bolts face down

Hers the history Sveedy

Original ETB made by Magneti Marelli

Two contact wipers, lasts about 150k miles then starts coding errors when the wiper readings don’t match. 10k miles after first errors it will start going into limp mode, very low power , 20 mph max

Yellow label ETB also M-M and is still contact type. Better software? They don’t seem to die like the white labels

Xmodex takes either one and puts on non-contact sensors

Finally , Volvo released a white label, non M-M contactless one that’s the one you want. They seem to be on eBay for $150-200

I looked quickly a week ago, you do have to put trust that the seller is telling you what car it came from.

IMPORTANT FOR JUNKYARD HARVEST

the stock wiring for the ETM runs behind the starter and is trapped by the right side starter mount. Most of us remove that and throw it away , it’s redundant and Volvo discontinued it in2002.

Don’t cut the ETM wires thinking you can solder them, there are CaNBUS data lines that don’t like Janky-ness

(Insert picture of startermount)

The 12mm block bolt is tough to remove in Northeast climates. You have to remove it and two m6 nuts on the right side of the starter motor

So maybe removing the intake is the easiest way to go....

Those also fail as the magnet in the shaft bulges and scrapes the windings.

Well what I found at the JY today, was a 2001 V70XC. I was hoping to find a white label, but the car had a yellow. The newer '04XC had a ETM that looked totally different, so when exactly did the use the white label ?

Only 01 and 02 P2's used the MM ETM like the 99-02? P80's. Not sure if with the change in P2's in 03 models if the 03-04 C70 P80 changed too or not.

Even the 02 date may be chassis related as the 02 XC70 I helped with had a later P2 TB (it is a dumb unit unlike the MM unit).
