Scan tool and fuel level

I heard rumor that it may be possible to monitor fuel level through the OBD port with a scan tool/code reader...Is this true or just an urban legend?

i have an ELM327 which shows calculated fuel amount, pairs to your smartphone and downloads torque software.
i leave mine plugged in 24/7.

Likely not without custom can commands.
