05-07 xc90 DIY Repair Costs vs non-bastard P80

Post by CIK7 »

Compared to a -98 P80, how high are the DIY repair costs of a 2.5T XC90? Common problems or fixes under the XC94M say keeping up with general maintenance is really all that's needed, but there must be stuff that breaks. I'm trying to figure out what those repair costs would be.

Motor is straight forward, if you know the transverse I4/I5/I6 cylinder then it's pretty easy to maintain with PCV service and oil trap and timing belt as the required maintenance items. Water pump and alternator here and there but my '05 ran great on the day I sold it in 2021 with 200+k miles. XC90 5 cylinder has two VVT hubs, they can wear out over time and start leaking oil from the front camshafts.

General area for common maintenance with the Gen1 XC90 is front suspension. High centered 4500 lb vehicle, you'll see wear from control arms and spring seats at a higher rate than a sedan for instance. Sometimes shocks as well. This is more or less a 100k mile thing.

I've owned an XC90 since 2005, have two at home as I write. Follow what others are doing, make some investment in decent quality parts, change fluids (all fluids) with some desgree of regularity and do the nominal maintenance in the book at or before it's due. That would be my advice if you're thinking to pick up an XC90.

I used to have 1998 V70 and 1998 S70. Currently has P2 S60 and XC90...

Engine maintenance costs (Timing belt, WP, spark plugs etc): similar.

Suspension: struts, shocks, control arms etc cost about 20%-30% more for the XC90. Probably from fewer XC90 than S60.

VVT Hub about $350-$400 but you only need to do it once.
