Inner front axle CV boot question - 98 V70 T5

Post by scot850 »

So, strangely the inner boots of both sides on this car seem to be slinging grease everywhere. I cannot see any obvious reason. What I am wondering if is that the car has lowering springs and if it is maybe pulling the inner boots out slightly.

The boots are aging, and could so with a refresh. So that is part of the plan. The outers are just starting to show minor cracks appearing but otherwise are good.

What I can't find is the correct part number to help sourcing the correct CV boots. One has a partial label but looks like it is missing the last digit. However, I cannot find any reference to the part number:

P916358

I believe there should be another digit, but I can't find any reference to the 916 numbers??

Thanks,

Neil.

It's not exactly what you're asking but for all automatic transmission P80 cars I go by the OP info from MVSer northernlights in the first post of this thread, it has never done me wrong: viewtopic.php?p=332235

There are two kinds of outer CV boot, NA and turbo:
- NA (small CV joint) outer boot GKN 300427
- Turbo (large CV joint) outer boot GKN 300439

There is one kind of inner CV boot, fits either NA or turbo:
- Inner boot GKN 300597 (this is "the Audi boot")

I've been using these GKN Audi spec inners for many years.

Thanks Eric! Wealth of info as usual. I did have a look at this. I have read it before, and had also discovered the same info but using a VW inner boot, I think it is the same GKN Lobro part number.

The issue I have here is that the part number does not appear on any databases I have looked at. The majority seem to start with an '8' with a 67 digit number. This one has a '9' as the first digit.

Also, I noticed that the inner boot fits to a round 'cup' where I thought they were all a hex shaped cup. However, I checked in the 'stash under my workbench in the garage, and there were 2 RH long axles. One has a round cup and the other a hex inner cup??

The axles in my cars that I recall have all had Hex inner cups. Not seven sure why I have a 'round' version. The Hex I think is actually from a 5 speed 00 NA Auto. Not sure what the other is from as it has no sticker ID on it.

So I need the 'Round' inner boots for the 98 T5. So, the linked thread does show that 'Audi' inner round axle cup. I'll need to check the stash for which ones I have in 'stock'.

This car has lowering springs, so as I mentioned, that may be the reason for grease being sprayed all over on both sides of the car, but no obvious splits in the boots?

So maybe, this may need the car to be returned to regular spring heights first.

Also, I am not looking forward to the LH axle as it has that near impossible balance weight mid axle span with 2 x Hex screws that rust and do not release before shearing. This has to come off to replace the inner boot as I do not like forcing the inner sliders out of the cup. Fortunately I have had to do this before and have a spare set of weights and new bolts. I'll just cut the old one off, still out the bolts threads and refurb.

I have a bunch of boots back in the shed at home - not home until Sunday though.

The GKN part numbers dont bear any resembalnce to the Volvo part numbers , IIRC.

I think I am clear on the outers, but it is the inners I need to confirm. I know I have a few new ones on the shelf. It is not urgent, but help always appreciated.

This is the 2 different inner CV boots. One on the left is the Hex version, the one on the right the 'round' version which are on the axles of the 98 V70 T5 auto with the 4 speed auto trans.

I have been trying to find sources of new Loebro GKN CV boots. I am finding it hard to find them with the 6 digit numbers we have above. They are still out there, but many places now use the Volvo part number for 2 of them,

31256240 - I believe this is 300427 for -98 P80 turbo OUTER CV boot

31256230 - I believe this is 300420 for -98 P80 turbo INNER CV boot - this I am not sure about as I am struggling to find cross references for this. I can't find a 6 digit Volvo part number for this for cross reference.

Can any one confirm either of the 6 digit numbers (Volvo/GKN).

Thanks,

Neil.

31256230 - I believe this is 300420 for -98 P80 turbo INNER CV boot - this I am not sure about as I am struggling to find cross references for this. I can't find a 6 digit Volvo part number for this for cross reference.

I believe you have the Volvo part numbers right, but the GKN part number should be 300439 for turbo outer boot, 300427 for naturally aspirated outer boot. I don't think anyone's ever found a GKN part number for the turbo inner boot. 300597 is the Audi part that people use instead.

300420 appears to have been replaced by 303485 which is 104mm high, ID 21mm/85mm. The 31256230 inner boot is supposedly 85mm or 84mm high, ID 24mm/92mm, the same dimensions as the outer boot but with a different (incompatible) cross sectional profile. So I don't think 300420 is a match.

Great info. I know I have used VW boots for the inners in the past. But n ow you mention it I'm not sure if that was a Turbo or NA. It has been a while!

Thanks.
