A brief interlude of inspiration and doing “ very good work”

Post by abscate »

I’m on a long business trip away from home in the UK and am in Mom and Dads town of origin , Dudley.

I am somewhat educated , and was inspired by first gen college parents to be eminently curious, which led to education, education, and more education. The more I studied, the smarter the people around me became, but my curiousity was my secret weapon.

Mom went to the Dudley Girls School, in Britain in 1946, high school was essentially our college, only meritorious students got in, like the top 2%

At graduation, students were recognized for achievement with a certificate for “ very good work” ina particular class

10% of the class got one merit. Maybe 1-2 got two. In s a show stopper year, someone got three.

Miss Ambrose, the Headmistress, reminded the audience that all applause was to be held until the end of the ceremony. You did not F* with Miss Ambrose.

Up comes Beryl.

“Miss Ellwood is recognized for very good work in English. “

Pauses.

Biology
Mathematics
Piano
Dance
Gymnastics
German
French
Physics
Chemistry

Pauses.

Turns to the audience. Puts down her papers
Begins to applaud, and the room picks up the hint, joins in, and stands.

This piece of paper is my humble beginnings, before I was even born.

That's very interesting that you were able to go back to her school and see that! What did she end up doing as an occupation?
