Another busy week, all I got done was the bumper/headlight/wiper/undertray. Feels really good to finally have the front back on it though, looks like real progress.

Well after getting it back together and taking it for a short drive I now know why it was parked. The rear diff is shot on this thing, sounds like a cement mixer full of marbles. Removed the VC and turning it by hand results in binding and noise. Now faced with two choices, pull it back apart and redo half the work I have already done or just throw in the towel and scrap it. Yes, I know I can just make it FWD but it would annoy the hell out of me knowing that it isn't right and is bandaged. For now I am just going to pull it outside and get back to work on the GTO until I make a decision.

Are you certain it is the diff and not the nose bearing in the VC unit? They fail but other than needing a long punch they are easy compared to what you have done to repair. Diff is a lot more work as the stupid design requires the rear subframe to be dropped to open the top of the cage to remove it. Totally stupid. Shame you are not closer as I have a diff and a couple of VC units in the stash.

100%, I removed the VC and turning the diff with it removed results in binding and noise from inside. The VC would be much easier as I have a spare one right here. Bangs head on wall

Time to find an awd scrapper and get you a diff on the cheap.

have you already dropped the rear axle subframe for the other work? If you know its free, it is about 4 hours to get that down again and open up the 'clamshell'

We dont have a lot of knowledge about AWD and R diffs on the P80 series here, maybe that needs some research.

It does ****appear**** parts are available for internal diff stuff...

Patterson auto wrecking in Cohoc. PA - listed at ~ $300 delivered?

I also just remembered my Albany Crew has a 1999 XC upstate which in a holding pattern of either repair or part out. THats another source of parts potentially. Ill PM you.
