Engine stops for no reason and then can be restarted without issues

Post by gratch1111 »

V70 2011 D3
While driving the engine stops. lights work so no power issues
Tries to restart, engine turns but doesnt start
Removes key and insert it again, engine starts as normal and off I go
Sometimes I can go 100m before the engine stops, sometimes I can go for 20 minutes
Tried the other key, same problem, its an electronic key that needs to be inserted, so not keyless
No warning light on the dashboard

Had it at my mechanic that said he got a code from the generator, but he doesnt think that is the problem, also the injector distributor only gets 6V, either sometimes or all the times(I dont remember), most things run on 12V?

Any ideas?

I'll tell you a story about my BMW back in the day. I would sometimes be making a turn, or accelerating from a light and the engine would stumble or even make it to 0 RPM. Now, I'd hit the brake, put it in N or P and restart it. Seemed odd and random. Fought for weeks on the issue. Standing at one point beside the car, hood in the air, with my father who looked down and said: "Shouldn't that be tight?" There was a separate little wire screwed to the side of the big positive cable at the battery.... That little loose wire went to the ECU. Every time I pulled any G's it would wiggle and shut it all down.

just to say clearly what manyvolvosmoveme is illustrating with their experience above.

check all ground points and major positive end junctions for corrosion/loose/frayed wires. anything that causes a wire to not be able to carry as much voltage as it could when new should be considered as a potential cause, and there's many reasons it could be intermittent. Identify systems that could cause this behavior, check them methodically and eliminate the possibilities one at a time.
