What have you hauled in your Volvo?

Post by volvolugnut »

I was inspired by LongNoseElk moving to a new house using his Volvo. I am sure there are many great stories of moving common and uncommon items with your Volvo sedan or wagon. Let's start a list!

I selected this forum only because it was the largest. Any year and model Volvo (including trucks if you have one) are welcome.

Had an alternator go out, so I hooked a genset to the battery and charged it while driving to go repair. Not exactly hauling. I have however put both a washer and dryer (on their sides) in my V70 at different times to move.

Most expensive item to date - 10k$ braille display.

Not in a P80, but a 1979 10 careless previous owner Volvo 245. Had a 1/2" plate glass fish tank move for my brother. Tank was 5ft long and just fitted lengthwise and cleared the tailgate aperture by about 1" all around!

2007 moving from Seattle to Denver

I also one time loaded it with some 6- or 8-foot long 2x4s with the back seats down, using the wonderful and rare capability to move the front passenger seatback forward. Who would think to add that to a 4-door? The seatback, not the seat position... does that even exist outside of P80s? Was it in P2s? Other brands?

My buddy who bought my 00 V70 SE base from me, drove it back to Calgary from Windsor Ontario having fitted HD rear springs to it out there after seeing how much stuff his son was bring back from the US during Covid. He said the car was approximately 200kg 'overloaded'.
Car and everything in and on the roof made it back safely. Seeing Matthews car picture brought it back to me!

This is also a feature in P2's.

My friend and I hauled a bunch of Mercedes parts from Volvolugnuts place in Oklahoma to Connecticut. 2 bumpers, 2 doors, 1 fender, 1 trunk lid, 1 rear window, a lot of misc. stuff plus tools and luggage for the 3600 mile trip :D

This is great fun! Thanks everyone!

My 1975 245 had coil over overload shocks added. I used to haul all my tools when I have building a shop 5 miles from home. I also hauled ladders and 4 x 8 sheets on plywood on the roof rack.
My 1983 245 moved lots and lots of books for my wife.
My 2001 V70 has hauled 8 foot lumber between the seats forward to near the front window. It also hauled a walk through door, but I had to leave the hatch open and tied down. Windows were down because exhaust gets blown inside. I also moved several book cases for my wife, Recently, it hauled home a 170 pound generator.
