2010 XC60 3.2L Misfire

Post by magnograil »

Will try to keep this short. Daughter driving, came back, compression down to 10-20 PSI in all cylinders except #3 @ 40 PSI. No idea why it lost compression. This engine has a cam chain so not likely jumped timing. 160K miles.
Put oil in the cylinders, compression came back to 140 PSI in all cylinders. Has misfire on #1,2,4, random and primary coil B P0352. Swapped coils misfire changed to #1,2,3. No rearranging of coils gave consistent cylinder # misfire except #1&2. No unusual noises other than rough running.
Put in new iridium plugs, no change. Eventually changed all the coils, plugs (gaped to 0.028"), injectors, cleaned throttle valve, replaced MAF sensor, Now misfire on #1,2, and random along with the permanent codes misfire #1,2,3,random, P0352. Checked all the fuses, pulled and replaced. Checked signal to #1 coil on oscilloscope, consistent pulse.
When started cold, it runs at 1500 RPM with a trace of misfire but when the RPM comes down to idle it gets rough and triggers the check engine light.
Have run out of things to change or check. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Take a look at this thread

https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic38702 ... ight=p0016

I suspect that your variable valve lift solenoid is faulty.

There are two solenoids and to get to the left one by cylinder 1 you will need to lift the engine and disconnect the engine mount most likely.

Good luck

Paul

PS Each solenoid operates 3 cylinders and you could swap the solenoid first for diagnostic purposes

The solenoid on the left switches the valves from low lift to high lift for cylinders 1, 2, 4

If the solenoid is stuck in the high lift position then it should lower compression when cranking

The high lift mode is only used for higher RPMs

Let us know what you find out

For anyone that is interested here are the part numbers for the VARIABLE VALVE LIFT Solenoid

Variable Valve Lift (2 solenoids per engine)
LR025967 Land Rover
31216281 Volvo

For my money I will use the Volvo part or the Land Rover part which ever is cheaper and available. The only difference being the box that it comes in

Take care

Paul
