Shifter ribbon cable - 2006 V70

Hello - can anyone tell me what the ribbon cable that attaches to the PC board in the shifter does? While replacing some plastic parts, mine came off and I kinda wedged it on but lost the cap that holds it in place. I have a “gear selector needs service” warning coming up on the screen. I am not sure if I have the pin 1 where pin one is supposed to be, but it kinda only seemed to fit into the cable one way. Picture is off internet showing cable, not my actual car….
