SRS module reset - 2012 S60 T5

My mechanic buddy recently had a black ice moment with his car and caught some damage down the passenger side. Now a few weeks later it has suddenly thrown a code for airbag warning. SRS - U300000 General failure.

Naturally he is about to sell the car but can't with this issue.

He took the car to Volvo and they basically say he has to buy a new module and have it programmed. That will end up being in the $1500 range on a $4000 car.

I watch a bunch of UK car repair videos where they regularly buy and repair crashed vehicles and have the airbag modules reset. Sometimes it has to be done only at the dealer.

Has anyone else had this issue? Volvo typically will not reprogram a non-new unit.

Is there physical SRS component damage perhaps? Broken connection? Either would prevent the code from being vanquished.

It is possible, but it is strange that it took a few weeks to turn up randomly. That is assuming the issue is even related to the accident. I think Volvo seemed to imply that may be the case, but I am now sure. The issue with Volvo is they likely don't reset these, the just replace and reload. I understand why they do that because of liability.

My kids 2002 S60 has a SRS internal fault. Sent to a service via eBay and they unfortunately could not reset it. Ordered a couple eBay replacements…one was configured for an S70, another a S80–no dice (pun intended) as the model has to match. So for the last couple years he’s just driven it without functioning airbags.

SafetyRestoreInc is who I used, worth a try for $60, seemed like knowledgeable folks.

A remote chance is a weak battery. Remove current (ha!) battery, wait 15 min, try to reset code with an advanced scanner.

Thanks for the info. My buddy is convinced this is not a real issue but he will have to go down a check list to look for possible causes if that is the case. While he no longer works for Volvo, his new work place has brand new Pro level Autels he can try. I also have Vida and he knows he can use that too. If he figures it out, I will update when I know the answer.
