I read that the sensor is located between the engine and the firewall (on top of the tranny?)
It's pretty tight down there. Any ideas or special tools on how to get to it? Is it easier to get it from underneath or from above? Anything that needs to be removed first?

The crankshaft position sensor is located in a notch at the front edge of the bellhousing, and would be directly at the top if the engine were mounted vertically. In other words, it is in line with the engine block, slightly to the car's right of centre, or at about the 11 o'clock position if viewed from the front of the car.
You shouldn't have to raise the car to get to it, it can be accessed from the top, passenger side. Access is fairly tight. In fact it has been described as being a choice between being able to see it or to get a tool on it. Long extensions and universal joints are the tools you need. It also helps to have smallish hands.
Be very careful not to drop anything down the hole when the sensor is out.
Bill.
