Strange engine noise coming from our 2013 Volvo XC60

This is the coolant line that leaks on the Alternator if it fails



It connects at the arrow in the middle of this picture



I keep a spare on my shelf just in case

I called the shop and the guy explained to me what's going on in more detail. So apparently the repair has nothing to do with the alternator, it's the coupler/clutch on the engine side that engages or disengages to supply more voltage to the alternator (I'm probably explaining the poorly). He was saying that was making all kinds of noise.

The pulley on the Alternator will freewheel like the back wheel on a bicycle.

If that’s what broke then I am surprised that it is making all that noise.

The typical failure mode is for the freewheel (clutch) to stop working and then you have a solid pulley

Post the work order with the part number when it is finished
