Door mirror electrics and why I hate electrics - 06 V70 AWD

Post by scot850 »

Those regulars on here will know how much I hate electrics on cars, and in particular modern cars with Canbus systems. Yes I understand mostly how they work, but trying t follow the wiring diagrams is much more challenging, especially as Volvo seem to lack the same level of detail like pin outs numbers on some, and illogically putting some items used in the same parts on different diagrams.

I will link a thread I have running on trying to install a set of 07 folding door mirrors onto an 06 V70 AWD. For the most part the wiring is the same except 2 wires I have found so far on the LH mirror that have different colors used for some reason. RH seems the same so far.

viewtopic.php?t=107656

The issue I have is what I call Volvo wiring math:

Currently I have the LH 07 mirror in bits, especially after I found someone had 'repaired' the mirror glass and in the process of re-attaching it, glue had run down and bonded it to the casing at the bottom. I'm hoping the motor is not fried.

After some work today I am making some progress. Also Royal Oak Volvo has an apprentice looking at this to help with the wiring understanding between 06 to 07 changes.

He pointed out the the turn signals do show up on a different section, but the 06 has no mention of the mirror turn signal repeater lights, but the 07 does. That at least help ID the wires for that.

I am currently (no pun intended!) working on the Volvo wiring math for an 07 LH door mirror (might be the same or similar to the RH).

So:

Door harness to mirror connector - There are 16 wires connected to all 16 pins on the door side of the connector.

Mirror connector to the mirror assembly only uses 14 wires. 2 pins are not used. I have to ID their numbers.

Mirror assembly for 07 folding mirror:

1) Turn signal repeater lamp - 2 Wires
2) Puddle light - 2 wires
3) External temp sensor - 2 Wires
4) Mirror folding motor - 4 wires
5) Mirror positioning motor - 8 wires

Hm............14 wires to runs 18 connections???

I'll have to make up a connector diagram and trace which pins go where.

I've also checked and the mirror caps are black, and if I can't get the repeaters to work, I believe I can transfer the caps from our current V70 mirrors to the 07 and they should fit. That way I can keep the car looking standard and just not worry about the turn signal repeaters on the mirror.

I love electrics............ :x

This reminds me of a "quirk" on my car. Passenger mirror had a mind of it's own vertically going up and down at it's own free will. I cut the Y-axis wire on the harness and never bothered with the issue again.

Electrical function delete!
I did the same on my hatch lock when the motor failed. I now use the key.

The 02 XC70 I rescued last year also had the issue where the aftermarket passenger side mirror would go to some pre-determined position every time you started the car. I swapped it for a used XC70 OE unit and all was then good.

Well, I think I have now figured out the wiring for the door mirror. Does not help the 06 and 07 have different wiring colors in some cases and even on the 07 the wire from the door harness connector to the mirror and the mirror side have different colors in some cases which differ again from the wiring diagram. Just great..........!!

At least now I think I can test the motors for the folding mechanism. Do I assume it is 12V for the motor? There is no mention on the diagram naturally.

I want to try and power the mirror from a power supply to ensure the mechanism works before taking the car to Volvo for programming. Pointless unless I know the mirrors do what they should. Through buzzing out the wiring I think I also have been able to determine what the strange terms like MX, MY and MF are. They are the MX and MY motion for the mirror motor and MF is the folding motor.

There are other references using a strange symbols which I now believe are the mirror memory positions presumably connected to using the memory function on the seat perhaps?

Sorry to be anal about this stuff but I need to understand wiring nonsense for future diagnostics. I have at least made some notes.

Not so fun fact. The rubber gasket for between the door frame and the mirror assembly is also different for 06 to 07. I had noticed the LH gasket had bits missing. Checked on the dealer sites. RH mirror gasket - $15.56. LH (the one I need) - $32.51 both plus tax. ????

They say if it was not for bad luck...............

Today was a good day. Having figured out what I believed were the functions of each of the wires, I dug out my 12V power supply to test if my figuring was correct.

Sure enough, I was able to get the mirrors to fold and open (simple wire +/- reversal), I was also able to get the X-Y movement to work and again, +/- reversal worked for reversing directions. Totally happy as at least if I go ahead now and install the mirrors they should at least operate as per the current one I would hope on the X/Y motion without any changes.

I still have to identify if there is a wire feed to the turn signal to see if installing it could be an option without rewiring the car.

Well this project has come to a point of should I do this or not. I have the plans to do it, but still waiting parts. The real issue for me now is that Volvo has actually changed the casing shape for the mirror caps not just added the turn signal repeaters to the original shape. The mirror glass is also different shape to the 06.

So my plan to transfer the color coded mirror caps is now a bust. So my choices are to leave as it is now, unhappy wife, or fit the 07 units with the blue caps not the grey. What a pain.

There is no choice here , really, only the illusion of choice.

Send us a picture of the blue caps when done
