Knock Sensor replacement - 2002 V70 Base

Post by Mr. Detail »

Just wondering after reading a few posts if I have to remove the manifold on my 2002 non-turbo v70 to replace the knock sensors?
It would seem there is a lot of extraneous things to remove before I can get to where I need to get to.
Might be a job for my mechanic.

Go here:

The knock sensors are visible 18 seconds in (Yayyyyy) which, I believe, answers your question.
It sure seems when one needs to replace the PCV system would be the best time to replace knock sensors.

Have yours failed? If you hear knocking, use higher octane gas.

Thanks, Georgeandkira.
Not sure if it failed or not but I just pulled both a P0012 code (Cam Position sensor) and a P0328 code (Knock sensor).
This car now has 222k miles on her. I don't think I have ever replaced the PCV system yet.

Is my engine what he is calling a "White Block" engine? Never heard of that term.

Yes. The 5-cylinder engines are aluminum, hence the name.
The nickname I've heard most often is "white engine".

I do not know how long Cam Positioning Sensors last on average. Nor do I know how to test them, if possible.

And that knock sensor is almost certainly not bad. Fix the cam sensor clear the code , see if it comes back.

the knock sensor code is telling you it works as designed.
p0012 can be checked for reaction time in vida, the most common fix is an oil change to improve reaction, its lagging.

Okay, thank you guys. I change the oil religiously every 5k miles whether it needs it or not. Just waiting for the outside temperature to get above 40 degrees for a few days in a row. :)
