Any idea what would cause the belt to wear like this? I haven't dug into it yet.

That's pretty obvious damage so you need to remove the cover and look at the path of travel to see what has been rubbing against it.

One of your pulleys might have a bad bearing or is misaligned causing the belt to run to the back and it rubbing on something there. Don't hesitate, get it fixed ASAP.

If the belt cover has been loose in position shown in photos, the edge of the cover may have rubbed the belt and frayed it.
Fix soon! If it fails completely, it will bend your valves and get very expensive.

I’d do the water pump, idler and tensioner while you are there changing the belt. No reason to cheap out and skip those. I even do cam seals so I don’t have to pay my Indy to do them later.
