Ended up ordering a used set of Tillman tools for the job. Read good things about them.. Will post pics of the process

Re "cheap camshaft tool and damaged camshaft"...

No matter what you do, there is a high chance that small piece will break off. We discussed that in the VVT, cam seal DIY I posted back in 2022. That small piece breaking off is inconsequential.
