Bleach question

Post by matthew1 »

Yes, just good old everyday bleach.

Q: after it's used to bleach something (diluted 1:1, but I don't think that matters), does it lose its "bleachiness"? Does it become less and less effective?

Depends how long you will keep this solution and in what container. My far removed chemistry knowledge would that if kept in closed container with being completely full, it should retain its desinfective power. If left in open container, eventually NaClO will break and evaporate. Water will evaporate later and NaCl should remain at the bottom. Please guys, dont be too harsh on me..it was 25 years or so ago
But as usual, dont mix any acid with it(vinegar most commonly or other acidic cleaner) unless you want to damage your lungs

So could it bleach a dark t-shit white, then the next day do the same, indefinitely?

This is a thought experiment assuming a) I'd put a lid on it at all times, only opening it to place and remove the t-shirt, and b) I could wring out 100% of the solution back into the container. I know B is not possible in reality, but roll with me on this.

You are sending me to a science class...I think, if we would assume "ideal" situation with tight lid, full container, proper temp, no sun light and no oxygen contact upon opening the lid it should last a long time, but not forever. I went and check chlorox website and they say a good for around 12-18 month if not open..
