Can the banjo bolt without the check value be used for the PCV system? Reviews seem to indicate the check valve is unnecessary.

Not sure how that works to protect it. Can't remember when I had an engine backfire so don't think that is the main reason for the check valve.

pine hollow diagnostics on youtube had a volvo where the ball bearing from the banjo went through the engine, they found it on the FOD screen in the cat converter, it chipped an exh valve on its way out , besides a misfire it drove for 50K miles before the valve burned up.

My Titanium grey metallic 2007 S60 2.5T lost its PCV check valve guts before I purchased the car at 223,901 miles. The parts went into cylinder 3, damaged the head, valves, piston top, and then destroyed the blades on the hot side of the turbo. I replaced the head, piston 3, and finally the turbo. The car now has even compression and drives great.
I replaced the PCV check valve first thing on all the other turbo Volvos because I don't want to replace any more pistons, heads, or turbos. Make sure you replace any of the old PCV check valves with a rolled lip with the new style.
