1999 V70 jammed tailgate latch

My new to me SIlver 426 tailgate wont open. I popped off the rear cover without breaking anything but even a firm push on the handle rod wont release the latch from the catch on the floor.

I crawled in, lifted the spare cover, and removed the T25 torx, then removed trim to get the rear plastic lip off

This exposed the 2 T45 holding in the latch.

The latch is still stuck on the hook - for another day.

We need to mate your tailgate latch with mine. Unless it is very warm (why?), my 2001 V70 will not latch even if slammed. Glad I do not open the hatch often.

I really don’t want cut that latch off.

You can buy a new latch from Mother but they aren’t cheap

Can you slide 2 thin pieces of metal down between the latch and the catch and then slide it forward towards the latch to compress the 2 hooks on the latch to release?

I've done this same routine in the past, was able to separate the latch from the striker by fiddling with the broken latch.

I don't remember if I took the whole assembly out of the hatch or was able to get it to let go by messing with the latch in place.

Of course, success by this approach will depend on how yours broke.

The plastic piece inside the latch pivots and rotates sideways. I can’t get it to move with a screwdriver , it’s jammed stuck.

On the assumption the latch is toast, can you cut the plastic boot off the latch to give better access to the mechanism? You still have to separate the 2 parts to remove the old latch from the car.

Unfortunately I don't have a spare any longer as I gave it to a friend when their car's failed. Reminds me I need to find another but P80's and wagons in particular, are rare in the junkyards these days.
