Oil change and tire rotation on both cars yesterday. My s60 has been having a knock noise after accelerating from a stop. This is the only noise I could reproduce under the car.
Is it just a bad tie rod end on both sides? Please don’t say it’s the rack. It’s going to the wrecker immediately if I need to put a 4th steering rack into it.

Both the nut holding it to the knuckle and the the jam nut against the inner rod are tight. I think the joint has just failed incredibly I suppose.
Seems odd as these were just replaced about 3 years ago. Guessing I need both outer and inner tie rods?

What you're really looking for is evidence of play in the ball joint, especially up and down play, but those outer tie rod ends should not be that floppy at the ball joint. Outers need replacing.
The video doesn't tell us anything about the inners. Rock the wheel back and forth and see if there is any in-out play at the rack end. Probably the inners are fine, unless they are the same low quality as those outers that only lasted three years.
No evidence of bad rack, I'd deal with the tie rod ends first.

Those inner tie rods look like they are both loose. I'd try disconnecting the boot at the inner of the inner tie-rod and see if they are moving when you twist the tie-rods like in you video. Either that or the inner end of the tie rods have ball socket have worn out.

Thank you guys. Yes I always check my ball joints as I have replaced them like 3 times too. Prybar against the knuckle to check for up/down play.
The tie rods were MOOG and thus are warranty so I will replace both inners and outers.

I’ve had tie rod ends that move easily on the ball with no longitudinal play, which is most important. The tie rods have to pivot on the ball to articulate as you steer. Those tie rod ends might still have service life in them.
