Rear bumper removal - 06 V70 AWD

My wife managed to back into the garage door frame while backing into the garage today. (2nd time in 2 weeks with 2 different cars........!)

Anyway, I will have to remove the rear bumper to see what is actually broken. I know the side bracket is broken, but not sure what might be broken on the bumper cover itself.

I know most of the steps to remove the bumper but can anyone clarify if there is a rivet or a screw on the underside that needs to be drilled out? I can't see a rivet listed on the parts drawings. The locating screw at the top edge is broken out.

I also have to replace the trim chrome strip as it is bent.

I'll need to take another look at this. The XC bumper is different to the V70. The side mounts for the rear bumper are only listed for the 05-07 V70 models. The instructions I read showed the 4 bumper bolts from the inside of the car at the back. 1 x T25 screw at either front upper corner and then possibly a screw or rivet on the bottom:

That drawing shows the top screw #20, but nothing I can see. If you look at the LH end of the lower bumper skin it looks like there is a bump for a mounting but nothing shown for that.

This makes finding parts hard 2nd hand as there are very few V70's in the junkyards ever here. There was one recently and the first think that disappeared was the rear bumper, likely it had the back up sensors. That car was stripped fast and is gone.

Looks like only new parts or maybe EBay, but they either have not got the parts or they are just as expensive as the dealer.

Well great new, well not, from Volvo. Parts availability>

1) Bumper Cover Bracket (Left, Rear) - Part Number: 30727018 – Readily available at the DC

2) Bumper Trim (Left, Rear) - Part Number: 39993627 – This will back order to Europe 30-60 days or longer

3) Bumper Trim (Left, Rear) - Part Number: 8693640 – Discontinued. (The chrome insert, this is bent with a 45 degree bend and the chrome cover damaged)

Just great. These cars are not common here, and nearly never in the junkyards. It has to be a 2005-07 V70 with no back up sensors which makes the parts harder to find.

Well, I decided today I would go look at what it needs to remove the rear bumper.

Well, the Vida instructions are only party correct. Yes they say there are differences, but no like this.

There are not rivets at either lower corner. In our car it has 2 'pan-head' T25 self-threading bolts, 1 either end.

There are 2 more at the top corner (one either side). This makes it easier as no rivets needed.

There are 4 elongated 'nuts' on the inside of the trunk. You have to disconnect the battery and remove it. There are 4 areas of perforation along the sound deadening which need to be peeled off to access the bolts. Do not allow them to drop into the cavity as they will be a devil to remove from there!

Finally there are 4 push pins along the bottom edge of the bumper. Push the centers up until the click and then you should be able to pull them out.

I have yet to remove the bumper, but I'm going to try to find parts first to save having to do it twice. Fingers crossed one of my Volvo buddies may have found an 06 V70 in the same color! If not I have now found the parts I need for repair in a couple of places.

If V70's were not so rare up here then I would consider that. I think I have the sensor controller in the stash as a spare for our son's XC70. I could them add the non-functioning back up sensors to the non-functional mirror turn signals..........

For now I would be happy to just find the parts in color locally.

I think to procedure is have her hook the corner of the bumper on the garage door jamb, facing down the driveway, drop the clutch and launch it. That bumper will come right off.
