Wheel bearing bolts - 1997 850

I got stuck removing the wheel bearing bolts, they are E14 bolts and I haven't got a socket set for those. I also don't new bolts, despite opting for the more expensive bearing kit.

Can someone tell me quickly what the bolts are? 8.8, 10.9 grade? M10 or M12 ish looks to be the size.

Definitely 10.9 grade. I think they are m10s. Unfortunately Skandix does not say.

I will take a quick peek to see if I have one in parts

Thanks, I went back to the store and they had no bolts, all they could offer was replacing the wheel bearing kit with the economy version, it had new bolts...

I got it changed, almost.

The new nut screwed on fine until it reached the part that is supposed to prevent it from unscrewing, so I took my air impact and screwed it on, but it was slow going and eventually it stopped. This is a pretty strong impact it shouldn't have a problem.

I tried to remove the nut but broke the 1/2 adapter for my 3/4" breaker bar. I got a 3/4" 36mm socket now to try with. But what an utter misery...

It shouldn't be that hard to get the nut on. Tightening it to what is required is a different issue! I use a 3/4" long breaker bar for final tightening, but really a good impact should be able to get it more than tight enough.

From your picture the threads look clean on the axle end so some thing is not right. Do the new nuts have nylon inserts for thread locking?

As I know the wheel bolts will be a pain, I remove the whole knuckle assembly so I can take it to a work bench and hold it is a vice. That also makes working with heat mush easier to see what you are doing.

By the way, you can apply heat to the bolt heads on the wheel bearing until the cows come home and it won’t do diddleybto release them. A pencil torch on the thread end, sneaked in behind the hub, will work great.

A very good friend taught me this.
