That is chafe damage indeed, not thermal damage. I imagine the chafing was ftom Mickeys teeth

6 weeks out and car is still running great. The wire short definitely was the problem. Still can't figure out how the wiring got damaged. The engine wiring loom is totally encased in a thick black plastic cover from the ECM box all the way down and across the cross member, and the damage was inside that cover. One person commented that it looked like rodent damage, but a mouse couldn't have gotten to the wiring inside the loom cover. Glad that someone shared their knowledge to get me over the hump on this one.
