With hope of not being a burden I will start brief and give you as much as you might want if desired.
Note: I have video of fuel pressure gauge and engine sound during start, stumble and stall.
1998 V70 base model with 169k miles runs for a minute or two then stalls. No error codes.
- During end of winter a "low on steering fluid" sound started.
- Sound went away after adding fluid (ATF) and temperatures warmed.
- Two weeks back the car died after a 5 minute drive.
- Can restart if I let it sit for a couple of hours.
- Replaced relay immediately.
- Bought new fuel pump but haven't put it in.
- Has an unwavering 42 fuel pressure (42 when priming, 42 even while stalling and 42 immediately after.)
- Replaced Crank sensor this week.
- Has spark immediately after stalling (testing spark with $5 tester from Harbor Freight.)
Based on an old Matthew's thread I'm concerned about Fuel Damper under fuel rail. ( viewtopic.php?t=86966 ) As stated earlier I had a sound I though was low steering fluid. That just happens to reside in the same area as the fuel damper.
Local shop has some guys reputed for old Volvo work. They say that after what I've done they would just be throwing parts at it.
So that leaves me kinda desperate.
Also I just bought a ICarSoft Vol V2.0 scanner and hope to figure out data capture very shortly and see if that is any help.
Hoping for and looking forward to your advice.

Replaced the relay with one that someone gave me about 5 years back. IPD had more (original Volvo) in stock so I ordered one that I'll try and then stuff in the glove box.

If you’d tried the bridging first and it didn’t work, then your old relay was probably still good to go.
I’d then retrace every connection you’ve touched before the problem started, before just throwing any parts at it.
Besides the relay, I just remembered that it’s a common problem for the antenna ring to fail too.
It’s the part that sits around your ignition key.
Otherwise, check ignition as well, a cracked distributor cap or bad coil could lead stalling/non start as well.

It just seems odd that I have no CEL or codes.
There is spark even immediately stalling. Which seems to point back to a fuel problem. But the pressure stays at 42psi so I feel like I'm going in circles there.
Jumping the relay makes me nervous but at this point I'm not sure I have a choice. Lol. Wish I had a car to go get some wire & stuff.
Already ordered a coil and MAF sensor. Yes, I'm throwing parts at it. With no error codes I'm just not sure where to go.

My brother is having a similar issue with his 97 850 base. The car runs for about 15 minutes and then dies. All his checks have so far raised a few faults that have been addressed but the base issue still is there.
He has:
1) Replaced the Fuel pump relay and jumpered it and none have fixe the issue.
2) Replaced the injector relay with a tested good one, issue remains,
3) Replaced various rubber elbows that were rotten, those improved the rough running issue
4) Cleaned the MAF
5) Checked the fuel pressure and it holds pressure around 43 psi even with the ignition off.
6) Checked the resistances in the cam and crank sensors.
There is still a slim chance it is fuel related, but I think at this point it is unlikely.
It feels like it is an electrical issue where a component heats up and dies. But at the moment is is being elusive.
Hopefully you have better luck!
Neil.

Hopefully, the MAF fixes the problem. It does sound like a problem with one of the sensors: stalling the engine once it goes into closed loop.dalel wrote: 17 May 2026, 08:58 Already ordered a coil and MAF sensor. Yes, I'm throwing parts at it. With no error codes I'm just not sure where to go.

Cam position sensor?
Fuel pressure damper will not stall the engine if bad.
It's there to "damp" pulses from injectors to keep them quiet as possible.
Bad fuel pressure damper symptoms are loud injectors pulses.
Cam position sensor or bad ect(or it's wiring, since wiring often goes bad on these cars).

While putting everything back together, this popped out from below the MAF. Isn't this the vacuum line to FPR? You can see a screw has been inserted into the hose to seal it.
This would seem rather relevant to the issue I'm having. But how on earth has this not been an issue for the six years I have had this car? And, what should it be plugged to?
